Yes, those are playing cards! I have a bottle of gesso and midge podge. Both aren't cheap, but last a long time. The playing cards are cheap... dollar store. I slap on gesso and/or modge podge and stamp, paint, or collage.
I like the pink one best of the two I think! Is gesso like a primer? I tried altering playing cards before but found it hard to pair appropriate glue with the glossy surface. Maybe that would work? Gesso is like a primer. You can also use regular paint primer, too. I hear that works just as well as gesso and is cheaper. (Think of your local Sherwin-Williams for sample size primer.)
